Bears roster ruminations

Determining a 53-man roster is admittedly a painstaking process for NFL coaches and general managers, who are trying to avoid giving up on a player too early or blindly believing in one for too long.

Lovie, Jerry try hard to convince wary fans

After a winless preseason darkened the outlook for even the most hopeful fans, Bears coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jerry Angelo figuratively fitted the 2,000 season-ticket holders in attendance Monday night at the Walter Payton Center with a pair of rose-colored glasses.

Big concerns: NFC North (SportingNews.com)
Chicago Bears The biggest problem remains a revamped offensive line that lacks NFL experience at their positions. Only C Olin Kreutz is playing where he played last opening day. LT Chris Williams has five starts at his spot, LG Roberto Garza hasn't played the left side since '05, RG Lance Louis never has played in a regular-season game and RT Frank Omiyale hasn't played that position in the NFL. The line has struggled in pass protection, although Louis and Omiyale have shown flashes of being effective run blockers.

Gilbert had two sacks and a forced fumble in the final two exhibitions but was beaten out by Henry Melton and rookie Corey Wootton.
